1837 Feuchtwanger One Cent Token, NGC AU-58

Private issue of Lewis Feuchtwanger, proposing a nickel-copper-zinc alloy to replace the bulky and unpopular large cents. Most privately issued cents during the Hard Times (1837-1844) approximated the contemporary large cent issues of the federal government, which were being hoarded due to the financial crisis. Feuchtwanger’s issues, however, also sought to replace the large cent with a more conveniently sized coin. While his efforts were unsuccessful, two decades later the government did replace the large cent with a smaller copper-nickel piece. This example has only light friction on the high points, and has attractive, original surfaces. NGC AU-58.
